Las Coloradas is a small town, placed at the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is a small fishing port which belongs to the municipality of Rio Lagartos in the state of Yucatan . The town has just over 1,000 inhabitants, dedicated mainly to fishing and some of the salt industry, very important in the region.
This small town has breathtaking and unique landscapes. Nearby it has a giant salt factory and amazing pink lagoons that give the township its name.
The lake near Las Coloradas around the Yucatan Peninsula enchants with its beauty and unusual color. Tourists come every day to see this unusual occurrence but also hope to bathe in it.
Soon enough they disappoint, when they about to realize that bathing in this lake is not allowed due to its excessive amount of salt.
What is the reason of this lagoon being so pink?
It appears that the tiny microorganisms which live in the lagoon, like brine shrimp and red plankton (algae), dye the water with their chemicals – notably, beta carotene.
Scientists assume that its unusual appearance is because of the big concentration of different types of bacteria and algae, as well as the low concentration of nutrients.
This town is different than the other tourist lagoons. It has miles of empty beaches, which is the perfect escape to nature and to have a picnic.
So if you want to escape from the crowd and have a lovely, peaceful and enjoyable vacation, this is the right place to visit.
