Recently, scientists have discovered an anti-aging compound called urolithin A. Where is this compound found, you ask? When pomegranate is ingested, ellagitannins are broken down within your stomach and is converted to the urolithin A via the microbes in our guts.
This compound allows our muscle cells to protect themselves against the effects of aging. The findings have been published in Nature Medicine. EPFL explains that the mitochondria are no longer able to function as we age and its accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria is what causes aging and other diseases. Patrick Aebischer, co-author of the study told EPFL, “It’s the only known molecule that can relaunch the mitochondrial clean-up process, otherwise known as mitophagy… It’s a completely natural substance, and its effect is powerful and measurable.”
So far, this has been tested on worms and rodents. It is reported that the lifespan of the tested worms increased by more than 45% due to their exposure to the urolithin A. Watch the video below.
