Its structure is well known but the functions are not known yet.
The Mesentery is actually a double-layered mesh fold which connects the intestine with the back of the abdominal cavity.
The anatomical description located in the literature for about 100 years, was not completely accurate. For a long time it was thought that the mesentery is composed of fragmented structures, media reported.
“This body part is far from the simple series of unrelated special sections, it is a single structure”, explains Calvin Coffey, Professor of Surgery at UL’s Graduate Entry Medical School of Limerick, Ireland.
According to him, the anatomy of the structure is described, and the next step is to explain its function.

“If you understand the function, you can recognize the irregularities in the work and then you have disease. By connecting it all together you get a whole new branch of medicine”, adds Coffey.
The announcement of his discovery was published in “The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology” journal.
Medical students and scientists now will focus their attention on research about the role of the mesentery and abdominal diseases.
