Like me, and you.. and any other living being on this planet, plants survive through the process of respiration, meaning that they inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide(CO2).
During daytime, the emissions of CO2 by the plants are almost completely negated due to the photosynthesis, which is the polar opposite to respiration.
However, when night comes, and there is no sunlight for the plants to draw, the process of photosynthesis gets more complicated, and therefore their carbon dioxide output get amplified.
Although the amount of CO2 emitted by the plants is nowhere near enough to suffocate us or anything like that abundance of oxygen can actually have a calming effect on us and can help with anxiety and insomnia.
The following plants emit loads of oxygen even without sunlight, thus making your power naps and overnight sleep much more soothing and coromftable.
Assuming you can keep these plants alive!
- Aloe Vera
Having any skin/health problems? The answer is courses, Aloe Vera. Known as the overachiever of the plant kingdom, the Aloe Vera plant releases an abundance of oxygen not only during the day but during the night as well.
Aloe Vera is one of the plants that don’t need your constant attention and does not need to be watered too often.
When it comes to reproduction, that’s pretty simple for the Aloe plant too, so don’t be afraid to cramp up your whole house with pots of Aloe and start reaping the benefits.
- Snake plant
Just saying the name of this plant seems fishy, let alone calling it by its nickname: ‘Mother-In-Law’s Tongue’ … Scary!
However, unlike your mother-in-law, you would need one of these somewhere around your house.
The snake plant is ranked as one of the best natural air purifiers you can have in your home, and similar to the aloe plant, I will not require too much of your attention. Just occasional watering.
- Neem Tree
For a while now, the benefits of the Neem Tree have been documented in the Indian Subcontinent. Although a synonym for purity, Neem doesn’t just purify the air, it is also a natural pesticide, which creates a barrier between you and the ever-annoying mosquito.
But that’s not all, the Neem tree takes it to another level by starving out the insects and preventing them from hatching eggs and reproducing.
However, there is a catch to growing a neem tree. It requires a room full of sunlight and the best quality soil to be used.
Unlike the snake and Aloe plant, the neem tree requires some TLC in order for it to grow quicker.
- Holy Basil/ Tulsi
The Tulsi plant has multiple benefits, whether it be from ingesting the leaves, or just sitting next to it, the Tulsi plant will clear your mind and relieve you from all that un-needed anxiety.
The main benefit is the scent that the Tulsi plant emits. It leaves a very characteristic scent which helps with reducing anxiety as we already mentioned but also helps you rest. After a hard, tiring day at work, a Tulsi plant in your Bedroom could do wonders.
Orchids.. how beautiful they are. Mainly used for aesthetics and good looks. But the orchid provides far more benefits than you think.
They provide a bunch of oxygen at night, which means you should it would probably be a good idea to have one bedside. But that’s not all it does, the Orchid has the ability to banish xylene(a pollutant found in paint) which will make you house even fresher. If you don’t like to pay much attention to your plants, then the orchid is the plant for you.
Orchids thrive on neglect, in fact, if you care about it too much, you may end up killing it. Just make sure it’s in a good location with plenty of sunlight, water it occasionally and let it do the rest!
- Orange Gerbera
Perhaps one of the most difficult plants to grow, the Gerbera has beautiful bright orange flowers, which purify and perfume your air at the same time.
The Gerbera has countless health benefits from curing colds, to curing cancer. However, due to difficulty in growing it, it is recommended to opt for a transplant from a nursery.
- Peepal Tree
The Peepal tree is the most superstitious of them all, the tree Buddha chose to meditate under.
Some claim that the souls of the dead live among its leaves. Nevertheless, apart from being a powerful oxygen source, the leaves of the peepal tree have proved to be able to manage diabetes, ease constipation, and treat asthma.
- Christmas Cactus
Who needs a Christmas tree, when you can get a Christmas cactus! right?
It may only bloom in December but the health benefits that it provides will keep you jolly throughout the year. The Christmas cactus emits oxygen all through the night, thus helping you sleep. But also thrives in dark rooms, making it not too much of a nuisance to grow.
- Areca Palm
Does this palm look familiar? I bet you’ve seen at least one of these in the dentist waiting rooms. But its functionality is much more than just a dentist office decoration.
These plants are very efficient in absorbing all kinds of harmful gasses and also help in humidifying the air. Since they are mainly found in dense forests, they are suited for areas exposed to little sunlight.
